Over 100,000 LA Residents Yet to Get Economic Stimulus Payment

Most U.S. citizens have received -- and spent -- their economic stimulus payments by now.

However, the IRS has identified about 20 million low-income seniors, disabled veterans and others with disabilities who are missing out on their $300 payments ($600 for married couples) because they are not obligated to file a tax return. In June, the IRS announced that 5 million people in this group had not yet filed. Of that 5 million, there are 106,312 Louisiana citizens who have not filed for their economic stimulus payment, leaving over $31 million unclaimed.

With the cost of energy, food and other expenses on the rise, the economic stimulus payments are as critical as ever, and assistance is available to those who need it. The IRS offers free face-to-face help in each major city in Louisiana for those who need to file. Those eligible have until October 15 to file for their payments.

LANO and the Louisiana Budget Project urge all nonprofits to help spread the word to ensure that the stimulus money gets to senior and disabled citizens, and low-income individuals and families who need it most.
