On Wednesday, Oct. 21, Baton Rouge newspaper The Advocate Capital News Bureau reporter Sarah Chacko attended several conference sessions and the keynote address by Geoffrey Canada, founder of the Harlem Children's Zone.

From Chacko's story:
"Nonprofit organizations in the state have to start taking action to help Louisiana’s children in the absence of government support, the leader of an organization that helped transform a New York City neighborhood said Wednesday.

"Geoffrey Canada, president of the Harlem Children’s Zone, said he used to think there was a plan to save America’s children from poverty and poor education.

“'There is no plan,' he told more than 450 nonprofit leaders and employees. 'If Louisiana’s children are going to be saved, you are going to have to do it.'”
